The Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety, Mr. Winston Katushabe, today chaired a meeting with bus drivers under the United Bus Drivers Association [UBDA] to address key operational and safety concerns in the bus transport sector.

During the meeting, the Commissioner noted divisions within the leadership of bus drivers and said Government will continue to engage all factions to ensure unity.

Key Resolutions:

1. Operations:The operations of Uganda Driving Standards Agency (UDSA) have been suspended to allow for investigations into its activities. UDSA has been conducting refresher training courses for bus drivers.

2. Driver Training:

The Ministry will review the refresher training framework, including recognition of authorized training companies.

3. Driver Badges:

The driver badge remains free of charge and renewable after one year. Renewal will be done online. A temporary measure will be put in place for drivers whose badges have expired.

Drivers were asked to submit a list of those with expired badges, strictly for those who have undergone training.

4. Way Forward: The drivers were appreciated for choosing dialogue over industrial action.

They have been given one week to submit a detailed written document outlining their concerns and proposals. A follow-up meeting with all bus drivers will be convened within one week.

5. Continuous Engagement: The Ministry of Works and Transport will henceforth hold quarterly meetings with drivers across the country.
