Government,EU and Giz hand over land Certificates to 400 residents in Gomba.

This is the second phase of the project Improvement of Land Governance in Uganda to increase Productivity of Small-Scale Farmers on private Mailo Land (ILGU2).

The Government of Uganda in collaboration with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GlZ) and European Union through the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development have handed over 4oo certificates of occupancy to four hundred tenants in Gomba district.
This is the second phase of the project aimed at improving access to land as a precondition for poverty and hunger reduction especially for women and other marginalized groups in Central Uganda.
The project aims to restore the depraved relationship between the landlords and tenants (Bibanja) on private Mailo land and has been concetrating in Mubende, Kassanda, Mityana, Butambala, Kiboga and Gomba districts, mapping bibanja and ascertaining tenancy rights.
The project is co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with a budget of € 4.4 Million.
Speaking at the hand over ceremony the minister of water lands and environment Judith Nabakooba says tenants who receive certificates of occupancy can now use their certificates as collateral to secure loans,engage in practical activities on the land without interruptions from the landlords.
