Experts call for more funding to increase seed production of sweet/Irish potatoes.

Research and Seed production centers in kabale are currently dilapidated and need urgent rehabilitation.

Funding researchers to increase the production of various varieties of potatoes has been highlighted as a getaway to increased food security in Africa.
This will  scale up innovations, support value chain actors, and facilitate huge production to boost the  intra-African trade in root and tuber crops.
This was disclosed by the experts currently in Kampala attending  the 13th Africa Potato Association (APA) Conference at Speke Resort- Munyonyo .
The week long conference ends today 30th May, 2025 and has been  running under the  theme  “Fostering Climate-Smart Cropping Systems for Sustainable Potato and Sweet potato Value Chains,”
According to frank Mugabi the spokesperson at the National Agriculture research organisation (NARO)the two crops of sweet and Irish potatoes  offer scalable solutions for nutrition, income generation, and environmental sustainability.
Frank Mugabi says the facilities for seed production in Uganda are dilapidated and need rehabilitation to be able to increase production of potatoe seed to meet the growing demand.
