Belgium donates Equipment to Local Government for Business and Human Rights.

The donation is to enhance efforts of the "Advancing Respect for Human Rights by Businesses in Uganda (ARBHR) Project,".

Enable the development arm of the Government of Belgium has handed over Equipment to the government of Uganda through the Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development to support a project aimed at Advancing Respect for Human Rights by Businesses in Uganda.

According to Ali Azoti the country manager Enabel Uganda, the tools given to Government of Uganda   are intended to help strengthen local government capacity in the promotion of responsible business conduct and human rights compliance.

The Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development (MoGLSD), with funding from the European

Union, launched the “Advancing Respect for Human Rights by Businesses in Uganda (ARBHR) Project,”

An initiative aimed at reducing human rights abuses linked to business operations especially those

Affecting women and children.

The €4.98 million project will work with individuals and companies through tailored human rights capacity-building and improvement plans, while raising awareness among one million Ugandans. Implementation will take place in the Central, Albertine, and Busoga regions.

Receiving the tools on behalf of the Government of Uganda, Bernard Mujuni the commissioner for Equity and Human rights at the ministry of Gender Labour and social development believes the tools will help fast track the Advancing of Respect for Human Rights by Businesses in Uganda (ARBHR).

The Project has prioritized providing equipment to local government Business and Human Rights focal points. This support equips them with essential tools for conducting field inspections, community, and engagement, documenting violations, improving data collection, and strengthening evidence-based decision-making.

It builds on Uganda’s 2021 National action plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR), aligning with both national and international human rights commitments, including Vision 2040 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Uganda has made significant progress in advancing Business and Human Rights (BHR), including the

Development of a National Action Plan to promote responsible business conduct that respects human

Rights. However, in key regions such as Busoga, Albertne, and Kampala Metropolitan, local authorities

Face operational challenges including limited mobility, inadequate documentation, weak ICT

Infrastructure, and delayed reporting, which hinder effective monitoring and response to business-

Related human rights issues.

With a focus on labor rights, natural resource governance and land, and digital rights and internet

Governance, the project seeks to increase stakeholder commitment across government, civil society,

and businesses to the Business and Human Rights (BHR) agenda.
