The Government of Uganda, through the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), received support from the Global Environment Facility to facilitate the implementation of a 5-year project for “Review and Update of National Implementation Plans (NIPs) under the Stockholm Convention (SC) on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)”.
The project aims to facilitate the implementation of the Stockholm Convention in developing countries by developing, reviewing, and updating national implementation plans and submitting them to the Conference of the Parties.
This is in recognition of the fact that Developing Countries are faced with challenges of management of products containing newly listed POPs, including issues related to tracking imports and exports of POPs-containing products and collecting accurate data for the POPs inventories.
In addition, as new chemicals are continually added to the convention, there is an increasing need for rapid and continuous updates of the National Implementation Plans for the Stockholm Convention.
The two day activity is aimed at raising awareness among the stakeholders about POPs, sources, and their effects on human health and the environment.
