Katakwi District is registering significant progress under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) Project, funded by the Government of Uganda, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and the Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF). During his evaluation visit to the district, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, Minister for Local Government, praised the implementing team and beneficiaries for the strong collaboration that has enabled the project’s success. At a meeting with district leaders, he challenged them to produce a comprehensive report within two weeks, clearly outlining departmental roles, project relevance, and impact, an assessment that will guide the next steps as the project approaches closure.
According to the current status, Katakwi has benefited from infrastructure and economic investments in 15 categories; A major milestone is the construction of the 13km Ngariam Palam Ising road, now serving 30,618 residents in Ngariam and Palam Sub-counties. Additional completed facilities include the Ongongoja Farmers Produce Bulking Store and the Ocorimongin Market Sheds, the latter benefiting 237,000 people, while construction of the Ocorimongin Rice Processing Plant, expected to serve the same population, is ongoing.
*Following his briefing at the district, Hon. Magyezi proceeded to the Ongongoja Bulking Store,* where he interacted with cooperative members who expressed gratitude for government support. After listening to their concerns and progress, the Minister issued several directives to enhance the store’s capacity: he directed that the Center for ICRISAT project be hosted at Ongongoja to boost agrobased production, modify the facility with stacking shelves to increase tonnage capacity, process UGX 600 million for additional working capital, fast track the procurement of a truck that will help evacuation of produce to better market centers, ensure water supply at the store.
He further directed the District Technical Planning Committee to hold a session at Ongongoja to appreciate the project achievements.
Significant gains have also been realized in water access with Orungo Corner piped water and sanitation scheme that serves 9 villages with 5,000 people, while the ongoing Palam Multipurpose Water Project will benefit 2,017 residents once completed. Renewable energy interventions continue to expand, including the installation of the Kanapa solar mini grid, providing clean energy to 730 people. Value chain development is equally strong, with 105 improved calves recorded under the artificial insemination program and 16 energy artisans trained in clean energy technologies.
Under Component B, LEGS project has strengthened agribusiness across Katakwi. The Ongongoja Fruit Growers’ Cooperative, which began with 30 members, has grown to 690 members and 3,300 outgrowers. In addition, the project has supported farmers, agro machinery investments that have enabled ploughing of 1,200 acres of land.
With these achievements and the Minister’s fresh directives, Katakwi District continues to demonstrate how coordinated investment, local participation, and targeted government support can accelerate rural development and strengthen local economic growth.
