The Government of Uganda has today dispatched food to the hunger stricken people of Karamoja sub-region following a prolonged dry spell that has caused shortage of food in the region.
The Prime Minister of Uganda Robinah Nabbanja flagged off trucks carrying maize floor and beans this morning by the National Enterprise Cooperation NEC, a business arm of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces UPDF.
The districts of Kabong , Kotido, Moroto, Napak, Nabiratuk and Amudat are the most affected districts in the karamoja.
Because of the prolonged dry spell in the region, the households are at risk of dying resulting from lack of food to eat.
The incident held at National Enterprise Cooperation NECD head offices in Bugolobi, Kampala a business arm of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces UPDF,was witnessed by Government officials and a number of stakeholders.
Through this intervention, the Government is delivering 9.4 million kilograms of maize flour and beans to over 313,000 households across 480 parishes in the nine districts of Karamoja.
The National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) , a business arm of (UPDF), the Uganda Prisons Service, the Uganda Police Force, and local governments have been tasked by the office of the prime minister to deliver the food.
The Prime minister was accompanied by the Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Sam Engola, Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs Esther Anyakun, , the Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance Alioni Yorke Odria, and National Enterprise Cooperations Managing Director Lt. Gen. James Mugira, and MPs from Karamoja region.
