The European union has urged farmers in Uganda to accept the on going efforts by the Government to have all coffee farmers to be registered so as to ensure they reflect on the National Traceability System.
This was disclosed by the European union and French Ambassadors Uganda as they visited the National Coffee Research Institute (NaCORI) in Mukono to see the progress of the EU supported projects.
some coffee farmers were un comfortable with the Government of Uganda’s process to register all coffee farmers in a bid to create the National Traceability System.
The European Union through the National Agriculture research organization(NARO) has supported Uganda in the coffee and cocoa sector under the EU-EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP) by sustainably increasing coffee and cocoa production through the elimination of losses due to pests, diseases, weeds, poor plant nutrition and unreliable climate.
In a bid to mitigate the effects of climate change and discouraging environment degradation,the European Union says they will not buy the coffee that has been grown in areas where forests have been destroyed in favor of coffee growing.
Ambassador Jan Sadek the Head of the European delegation to Uganda, the French Ambassador to Uganda H.E Mr Xavier Sticker in company of Dr Yona Baguma the director General National Agricultural Research organisation says registration process will enable Ugandan farmers to get guidance on how to comply with the required standards and the European Union Regulations on deforestation-free products (EUDR).
