The Council for Abavandimwe has expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for taking their concerns seriously and engaging with the community regarding discrimination.
The community had faced challenges related to citizenship, land ownership, obtaining national identity cards, and passports due to their tribe’s name, leading to difficulties in accessing basic servies, employment, and education, among others.
This prompted Banyarwanda to raise issues related to marginalization and unfair treatment of the Banyarwanda community in Uganda.
In response, the president issued an executive order aimed at safeguarding the citizenship rights of the Bavandimwe community addressing long-standing concerns about their treatment when applying for identification and travel documents.
Speaking to the media in Kampala, the chairperson of the council, Frank Gashumba, expressed relief that the community is nolonger facing discrimination in accessing national documents despite various slight challenges still faced.
