The tax body explains that the industry is highly lucrative but difficult to regulate as most operators are mobile
This was disclosed by Nicholas Musoke the duduring the retreat that has brought together members of the Tax Justice Alliance Uganda.
The retreat organised by the Tax Justice Alliance Uganda (TJAU) is comprised of civil society organisations, private sector representatives and technical experts.
This involves the review of Uganda’s existing tax policies and sharing alternative tax proposals for FY 2027/28.
The retreat comes at a critical time as Uganda seeks to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation while ensuring that the tax system is fair, progressive, inclusive and responsive to the realities of ordinary citizens and businesses.
The discussions focuses on identifying gaps and loopholes in the current tax regime, addressing tax administration and compliance challenges, examining the distribution of the tax burden, and developing practical proposals that can enhance revenue mobilisation without disproportionately affecting low-income households, women-led enterprises and small businesses.
The engagement also provides a platform for stakeholders to develop evidence-based tax policy proposals for submission to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED) to inform the FY 2027/28 budget process.
